Headmaster's Office

John Milroy '79

Mr. John K. Milroy was appointed the first lay Headmaster of Marmion Academy on July 1, 2003. Prior to his appointment as Headmaster, Mr. Milroy served as the Academy’s Associate Headmaster (2001-2003); Theology Instructor/Department Chairman (1995-2004); Director of Student Retreats (1997-2000); Director of College Guidance (1993-97) and Director of Enrollment (1991-93). Milroy earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from North Central College in Naperville and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Eastern Illinois University. He has also done graduate work in Catholic Studies at Loyola University, Chicago. Prior to joining Marmion Academy, Milroy served as the Director of University Admissions at Aurora University, Aurora, Illinois In addition to his teaching and administrative experience, Milroy has a special appreciation of Marmion's history and traditions. The Milroy family of Batavia is a three-generation Marmion family. Mr. Milroy is a 1979 graduate; John's father, Bernard J., Sr. is a 1938 graduate; two brothers, Bernard J., Jr. and Timothy, are graduates of 1969 and 1987 respectively; and John's son, John K., Jr. is a 2004 graduate of Marmion. John and his wife, Susan, reside in Batavia.

Marsha Bock, Secretary to the Headmaster

Mrs. Bock started at Marmion in January 2001 as Secretary to the Headmaster. She and husband Doug have 4 children; Marmion grads Michael ('98) and David ('99), Kate (Rosary '01) and Sarah (Rosary '05).

 


Dean of Students

Rick Handell, Dean of Students

Mr. Handell is joining the Marmion community as the Academy's Dean of Students. He retired from the Aurora Police Department (APD) in October, 2008, after 32 years of service to the Aurora community.  From 1976 to 2003, Officer Handell served the APD as a patrol officer and general investigator; he conducted personnel background investigations; was active in community crime prevention and neighborhood policing programs where he routinely spoke before both large and small groups.  In August 2003, Officer Handell was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to a street patrol supervisory position.  In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned as the supervising Lieutenant of the Central Services Division, Support Services Bureau.  In this position, Lieutenant Handell had direct supervisory and management authority over the Booking/Jail Unit, the Records Unit, the Crime Analysis Unit and the APD’s Telecommunications/9-1-1 Center.  As a Lieutenant, he managed 3 police sergeants, 3 civilian managers and approximately 54 civilian personnel within the various units. Mr. Handell and his wife Karenl are the parents of three Marmion graduates, including: Bryan (Class of 2000, currently an Officer with the Aurora Police Department); Nicholas (Class of 2003, currently a Firefighter with the Aurora Fire Department) and Timothy (Class of 2008, currently a sophomore at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign).  Mr. Handell is a 1999 graduate of Aurora University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Studies & Criminal Justice Management.  He has also completed hundreds of hours in professional development courses through Waubonsee Community College; the Illinois Police Training Institute; the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy (College of DuPage); Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety; the National Crime Prevention Institute and the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department.

Dean Branstetter, Assist. Dean of Students, Astronomy/Meteorology, Geography/Geology, Anatomy/Physiology, Wrestling Head Coach

Mr. Branstetter is in his 8th year at Marmion. He is teaching courses in Astronomy/Meteorology, Anatomy/Physiology and Geography/Geology. He started up Marmion's wrestling program in 2002. Mr. Branstetter received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Indianapolis and joined Marmion with fourteen years of teaching and coaching experience at the high school level. He and wife Renea have a four year-old daughter Maggie.

Connie Linster

Mr. Linster started at Marmion in the Dean of Students Office in August, 1989. Her husband and two sons are Marmion graduates - Dave '59, Eric '94 and Jason '97.

 


Academic Dean

Julie Garofalo, Academic Dean

Mrs. Garofalo joined the Marmion faculty in 2004 as the Director of College Guidance. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Western Illinois University and a Masters of Business Administration from Benedictine University. Since 1983, she has been a faculty member of the graduate school at Benedictine University, teaching courses in Strategic Information Technology Management and Strategic Management. Garofalo served as the Director of the Master of Science Program in the Management of Information Systems at Benedictine. Most recently, she has been self-employed as an independent consultant, trainer and lecturer. Mrs. Garofalo has served as a long-term substitute teacher at Rosary High School and has been a frequent guest-speaker at Aurora Central Catholic High School on issues related to the college admission and financial aid process.

BrownSherry Brown, Academic Dean Secretary

Ms. Brown joined the Marmion staff on August 1, 2005. She works in the Academic Dean's office. She has three children; two daughters and a son Michael '08.

 


College Guidance

Dan Thorpe, Director of College Guidance, Head Football Coach, Head Track Coach

Mr. Thorpe is in his fourth year as Marmion's Director of College Guidance. Last year, the Class of 2008 earned a record $12.1 million dollars in college scholarships and grants. He joined the Marmion faculty two years ago as a Social Studies instructor and Head Football Coach. Prior to joining the Marmion staff, Mr. Thorpe was a guidance counselor and the Head Coach at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School (Chardron, OH). He has over 20 years of coaching and teaching experience; he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Steven’s Point and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. In addition to his teaching and coaching responsibilities, Mr. Thorpe will serve as the manager/moderator of the weight room and weightlifting club.

Cindy Zaeske, Guidance/Dean Secretary

Mrs. Zaeske joined the Academic Dean/College Guidance Office on a part-time basis in 2008, providing additional secretarial support to Julie Garofalo and Dan Thorpe. Mrs. Zaeske earned a Bachelor’s Degree from National-Louis University and has been very active in local youth theater and dance programs.

Mrs. Patricoski began working in the Admissions Office in June of 1999. She had two sons graduate from Marmion Adam '99 and Matt '01.

 

 


Development

Fr. Charles Reichebacher OSB, Director of Development

Fr. Charles has been in teaching/administering at the Academy since 1968 (37 years). Duties have included Theology and Sociology teacher (11 years); teacher and Associate Director of Development and Alumni Director (14 years). He is currently Director of Development (20 years) for Marmion Abbey, Marmion Academy and Priory of San Jose, Guatemala.

Dan Howell, Director of Alumni Relations & Annual Fund

Mr. Howell came to Marmion Academy in 1995 after working for the Boy Scouts of America as a Finance Director of a local Boy Scout Council. He began as Director of Annual Fund and Publications. In 2001, he became Director of Alumni Relations/Annual Fund. Mr. Howell graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1971. He has two grown sons and is married to Nancy (36 years).

Madelyn Weed, Director of Public Relations & Communications

Mrs. Weed joined the Marmion Development Office in June 2001. Her responsibilities include the Marmion Magazine, media relations, Marmion's Website and other Marmion publications. She is a Rosary grad ‘95 and graduated cum laude from the University of Central Florida with a B.A. in Public Relations and Advertising. Her three brothers attended Marmion; Jim Freid-Studlo ‘97, Tim Studlo '05 and Peter '08. She and husband Andrew have two children.

Carmen FredaCarmen Freda, Associate Director of Development

Mr. Freda has joined the staff as the Associate Director of Development in 2007. He is the father of Marmion alumnus, Adam Freda '01 and has over thirty-five years of professional experience, most notably at Mooseheart Child City and School, where he was employed for twenty-seven years. Following a long tenure as Elementary School Principal and the Director of Athletics, Mr. Freda served as the facility's Superintendent the final seven years. After his career in education, Carmen then held the position of Director of Training and Documentation at both Lucent Public Safety Systems and Intrado.

Betty Sellen, Development Secretary

Ms. Sellen joined the staff as Development Secretary in 2008. Her family has a long history with Marmion – her mother managed the Print Shop (40 – 50 years ago) and her brothers are graduates of Marmion. Her father was also a good friend of Marmion and a number of the monks of Marmion Abbey. Ms. Sellen has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Rosary College (Dominican University) and a Master’s Degree from Columbia College in Chicago. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Waubonsee Community College teaching in the Humanities Department.

Donna Bohr, Alumni Association Secretary

Mrs. Bohr is in her20th year at Marmion. Her husband and sons are Marmion graduates, Jim '66 and sons Nick '93 and Ted '97.

 


Treasurer's Office

Jeff Walan, Treasurer

Mr. Walan, a 1961 graduate of Marmion, joined the administration in 1999 as Treasurer of the Academy. Mr. Walan received his BBA in Finance from Loyola University, Chicago.

 

Kathy Schwartz, Assistant Treasurer

Mrs. Schwartz joined Marmion staff on July 8, 1991. She has worked in the Treasurer's office for the past 7 years.

 

 

Jennifer Schmidt, Assistant Treasurer

Mrs. Schmidt joined the Treasurer’s Office as the Academy’s Assistant Treasurer in 2008. She is a Certified Public Accountant and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Millikin University. She most recently was employed by the Accounting firm of Selden-Fox in Oak Brook as an Audit Manager and Accounting Services Manager.

Judy Kosky, Counselor

Mrs. Kosky has been at Marmion for 13 years. In addition to facilitating Life Groups, teaching sophomore health class, Kosky is involved with Campus Ministry--Kairos, Christian Life Committee, and the Wellness Team. She received her BS from Depaul University and MS from Illinois Benedictine College. She also has counseling experience in parish setting, agency and private practice.


Technology

Dr. Vic Pinks II '72, Science Chairman, Physics, Technology Director

Dr. Pinks, a '72 Marmion graduate, joined the Academy faculty in 2000. In addition to his teaching duties he moderates the Technology Club working with students on various science projects including high performance computing using a 10 node Beowulf development cluster located at Marmion Academy. He mentors Honors Integrated Science Thesis topics on molecular dynamics computer simulation methods. He is the Technology Director responsible for IT including advisement on technology growth and education at the Academy. He is CSO for Edgebrook Research, LLC (www.edgebrookresearch.com) which is headquartered on the Marmion Academy campus. Dr. Pinks received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Aurora University and his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Northern Illinois University.

Mr. Mitchell organizes the transportation needs of the students from train pickups to sporting events. He is the father of Matt ‘02, Joe ‘06; the son of Mark ‘33; brother of Tim ‘58, Jack ‘60 and Bob ‘63; and the uncle of Brian ‘83.

 

Michael Stroup, Garage Mechanic

Mr. Stroup joined the community in 2008 as the Academy’s and Abbey’s Mechanic and Garage Manager. He is a master mechanic and most recently was employed by Gjovik Auto Dealership in Sandwich, IL.
