Head Football Coach Dan Thorpe entered his fifth season with the motto “Finish Strong.” During the 2008 season the Cadets lost by 2 points to both the Class 2A State Champion Immaculate Conception and the Class 5A State Champion St. Francis.

An early season loss to South Elgin did not deter the Cadets from rattling off eight consecutive victories in an impressive fashion. Mundelein was soundly beaten 24-8 with a dominating defensive effort. Junior linebacker Mike Carbonara returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown and senior Chris Tydd kicked a 37-yard field goal. A big victory over St. Francis 21-7 snapped the Spartan’s 12-game winning streak. Senior Bobby Winkle scored one touchdown and made a late interception to seal the victory. Senior quarterback Will Sterne was player of the game.

The Cadets then relied on great conditioning and pure heart and desire to defeat Marian Central 41-27. In the second half Marmion forced four punts on four consecutive drives and intercepted a pass.

Newcomers to the varsity team were sophomores Mike Duy and Andy Healy and freshmen Zach Bennett and Dan Duhig.

The Cadets advanced a swimmer to the State Meet in every event. Capen led the way by winning the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. His time of 1.55.96 in the medley was almost five seconds under the State-qualifying standard.

In the State Meet Marmion fell just short of earning a team trophy, ending up two points behind third place Glenbrook South. This was the fastest State Meet ever, clocking several new State Records and one National record.

Coach Schalz was quoted as saying “These guys swam hard all the way to the end. I’m very proud of what they accomplished.”

Wrestling

Freshman Eddie Greco and his junior brother Pat made Marmion history as the first wrestlers to qualify for the State Wrestling Meet. Eddie finished fifth at State in his weight class. In this stellar 3-0 victory, Tim struck out eight and walked one. Additionally, his brother Matt broke the school home run record with 7 (the previous record was 6).

This year’s baseball team did not have the benefit of playing home games on the Marmion campus due to their new varsity diamond not being ready for play, but they certainly played with emotion up to and including their heartbreaking loss to Rock Falls in the IHSA Sectional Championship game. This was further than any Marmion team has gone in the state playoffs.

Lacrosse

LacrosseIn late February 2008, with the support of the Marmion Althletic Department, a group of dedicated students and parents formed the Marmion Lacrosse Club, led by John Emanuel, father of Dan ‘10. Coach Kevin Griffin, a semipro with MVP status in his native Canada, took on the task of teaching the 25 eager students the rules of the game.

“The team certainly has the talent and drive to provide a more consistent showing next spring,” stated Coach Griffin. “It was stunning for me, as a coach, to watch the development of this young team from one game to the next and it was a honor to be a part of it.”

The season began with a scrimmage and ended with a playoff event hosted by Marmion for the Midwest Lacrosse Club League. Marmion finished in a respectable third place in the League.

An emerging sport document has been signed with the IHSA and this year the team is competing at both the JV and Fresh/Soph levels.
