The Canterbury Society was founded in honor of St. Augustine of Canterbury, the patron saint of the Abbey Church at Marmion. St. Augustine of Canterbury (d.605) is reverenced in the English Church as the missionary who brought Christianity to southern England and founded the Metropolitan See of Canterbury. He was a monk of St. Gregory the Great's monastery in Rome and was sent by the Pope to England to preach the Christian faith there.
