Rifle Team Dominates State Championships
For the fifth consecutive year Marmion Academy’s Schroeder Snipers Rifle Team dominated the Illinois State Junior Air Rifle Championships earning both the Team and Individual Championship Titles. Chaz Leonard of Geneva finished 1st overall, followed by teammate Joe Munder of Somanauk in 2nd place. Leonard is now the first individual ever to win the state individual title in three consecutive years.
The state champion precision team members are Leonard, Munder, Edward Malnar of Lafox, and Tyler Estes of Geneva. The state champion sporter team, consisting of Justin Depergola of Batavia (1st), Malachi Fischer-Porter of Belleville (3rd), Jarrett Doyle of Wheaton (5th), and Tom Schafer of Batavia (7th), also took four of the top ten spots individually.
Malnar also finished second among the precision shooters.
Leonard and Munder have been invited to compete on the precision rifle team representing Illinois at the NRA Air Rifle Championships this summer at Camp Perry, Ohio. Depergola and Fischer-Porter have been invited to compete on the state sporter rifle team at the same match. Leonard and Munder recently earned silver and bronze Excellence in Competition medals by placing in the top 25% of nationally sanctioned matches. They are currently ranked 3 and 4 in the Midwest, respectively, and 17 and 18 nationally.
In January the team of Leonard, Munder, and Jake Stein of St. Charles took the gold in the Illinois Junior Olympics, with Leonard and Munder earning individual Silver and Bronze medals, respectively, for men’s air rifle. This team has now qualified for the second year running to compete in the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s 3 Position National Air Rifle Junior Olympics, which will be held in June at Camp Perry, OH.
Marmion’s Rifle Team is coached by MSG Leon Collins. Schroeder Snipers are named for SGM (Ret) Walter Schroeder USA, a long-time JROTC instructor at Marmion and currently the assistant librarian.
