LEAD Program Introduces "Leadership in the Real World"

Marmion's LEAD program  is conducting a once a month speaker series entitled: “Leadership in the Real World” during the LEAD morning assembly. The  Kick-off for this series occurred during the LEAD Commissioning on September 22nd.  Our first speaker was Dr. A. Simon Pickard - Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The “Leadership in the Real World”  Speaker Series is designed to:

  • Give our students a “real” sense of the realities of employment
  • Give our students an example of real-life leadership
  • Inform, educate, and motivate our students to seize the opportunities that await them
  • Expose our students to a variety of career fields
  • Provide our students an opportunity to ask questions of professionals about career choices
  • Give our students the opportunity to meet role models from whom they can learn

Our next event will be held on October 25, 7:30a.m.-8:10a.m. in the Lux Dining Hall.  Our speaker this month is Mr. Christopher Surtz. Chris is a Senior Manager of Operations at the FedEx Express complex at O'Hare Airport. He began his work with FedEx in 1994 and has held leadership positions since 1986, Chris has successfully managed multiple locations in the Chicago area, with as many as 300 frontline and management employees; including drivers, cargo handlers, and office personnel.

We invite anyone within our Marmion community to attend the LEAD speaker series.

Clothing Drive - October 21 - October 28

It is time for the Annual Sophomore Theology Class Clothing Drive.  We have had great success in past years collecting upwards of 3,000 lbs of clothing in one year..   This year's goal is to collect  ONE TON OF CLOTHING!    A few facts:

  • We are collecting clean, gently used winter coats/jackets, hoodies, jeans, flannel shirts, hats, gloves, children's winter clothing
  • Clothing goes to charitable groups in the Fox River Valley
  • Collection point is in the gym foyer every morning before school
  • We need Mom volunteers to help sort the clothing (please contact Fr. Michael Burrows)
  • Once the clothing drive is over Mr. Johnson and Campus Ministry member will deliver the donated items.

College Guidance

College Planning Day - Today October 16

Marmion will conduct the first of two college planning days.  These days are designed to provide all Marmion students and parents with valuable college planning tools.

The day begins at 7:30 AM for all Marmion freshmen, sophomores and juniors who will take the PSAT test. The Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT booklet which outlines all the information related to the PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship program was given to all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in their English class this week.  Along with the booklet is a practice test and a letter to parents explaining test day procedures.

The data that we receive from this test are very important in measuring individual performance growth and are excellent indicators of individual academic potential.  Data are also used to guide curriculum and instructional design.  Encourage your son to be well rested and to do his best…then we can do our best in meeting his academic needs.

October 16 Schedule

Please note the following regarding the test day:

  • All testing begins promptly at 7:30 AM in the assigned test room.  Please be in your testing room ready to begin at 7:30 AM.
  • This is a regular day of school.  After testing all classes will meet on a modified schedule (see below).
  • Please bring the following to the test session:
    • Two number 2 pencils
    • An approved calculator – please see page 17 of the Official Student Guide
    • Your student ID number and your e-mail address
    • Please read carefully the Test Regulations on page 4 of the Official Student Guide paying particular attention to the regulations related to the use of cell phones or other electronic devices.

Seniors are encouraged to use this day for College visits, completing college applications, writing college essays, and researching scholarship opportunities.   Mr. Thorpe will be available all day to assist seniors.  Members of the faculty will also be on hand to help students with their college essays.

The day concludes with Parent Academy in the evening.  This is an opportunity for parents to gather very important information regarding the many aspects of college planning.

Parent Academy - October 16

On Wednesday, October 16th, Mr. Thorpe and Mrs. Garofalo will be presenting a “College Night” on behalf of the Student  Academic Services department.  This meeting will feature various speakers on academic and college topics.  The meeting will begin at 7:00pm in the Koch Theater and last until 9:00pm.  Parents will have the option to attend two of the following sessions on the list below.  All parents (Freshmen – Seniors) are encouraged to attend.  Please RSVP so that we may be better prepared for your attendance.

Rosary Presents Bye Bye Birdie in November

Rosary High School will present the musical Bye Bye Birdie November 8-9-10 at Rosary High School’s McEnroe Auditorium.

Bye Bye Birdie features music by Charles Strouse with lyrics by Lee Adams and book by Michael Stewart. This popular musical is a satire---done with fond affection---on American society in the early 1960s surrounding the teenage obsession with singers such as Elvis and the rock’n'roll movement. As teenage idol Conrad Birdie is about to be inducted into the Army, he visits the small town of Sweet Apple Ohio to bestow One Last Kiss on one lucky teenage girl representing his adoring fan club. The show also features the songs Put on a Happy Face, A Lot of Livin' to Do, Kids, and more. The original Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Stage direction and choreography is by Kristin Voris, and music and vocal direction is by Megan Drahos. Technical directors are Rob Stredde and Chris Huntoon. The cast includes 40 students from Rosary and Marmion, and music is provided by the Rosary Symphony Orchestra with additional musicians from the Marmion-Rosary Band.

Show dates are Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. Show tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens.

Join us for a 1960s-style diner dinner on Friday night serving hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and root beer floats. ($10) Saturday night features a pre-show “Taste and See” wine tasting event in the school library ($30). Both are fundraisers sponsored by the Rosary Fine Arts Boosters to fund already-installed auditorium improvements, including lights and sound.

Tickets will be available online this week at http://rosaryhs.com/musical. Tickets may also be purchased by mail and in the Rosary school office. For additional information, call the school at (630) 896-0831.
