Brian Birch Choral Directors, Assistant Band Director, Fine Arts Department Chair, Improv Club Moderator, Broadcasting/Film Production Moderator. Mr. Birch began teaching the chorus at Marmion Academy in 2012. He brings a wealth of experience having graduated cum laude with a BA of Acting and a BA of Music Education from Illinois State University where he performed in several plays and musicals. In 2013, Mr. Birch performed with the Fox Valley Festival Chorus at Carnegie Hall conducted by John Rutter in a performance of Rutter’s Requiem Mass. He has also performed as a soloist with the Fox Valley Philharmonic Orchestra. Currently he sings with the Sts. Peter and Paul Choral Scholars singing major works and touring the country.
He has now dedicated himself to Marmion Academy, becoming the Fine Arts Department Chair in 2016. He is currently the director of the Marmion Men’s chorus, he teaches Music Appreciation, Film Production, and Digital Music Composition in addition to assisting with the Marmion Rosary Band and the Marmion Spring Musical. Additionally, he sponsors the Speech/Improv club and the Film Production and Broadcasting Club. He looks forward to exposing students to their own creative prowess and providing them with the opportunities to explore and mature their creative abilities. He is a proud member of the Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) and serves on the Illinois board of directors of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) as the chair of Tenor/Bass choirs. He has extensive knowledge of dramatic interpretation and expression from his performance experiences, which he uses to inspire his students to interpret the text and use the music to impact their audiences. He implements various elements of musical understanding through visual and kinesthetic techniques. Mr. Birch uses his gifts to generate enthusiasm for creativity bringing about self-actualization. He has motivated his students to pursue music in college, some of whom have earned scholarships to sing and perform.
Marsha Bock Executive Assistant to the Head of School and Principal Mrs. Bock started at Marmion in January 2001 as Secretary to the Headmaster. She and her late husband, Doug, have 4 children: Michael ’98, David ’99, Kate (Rosary ’01) and Sarah (Rosary ’05).
John Breckenfelder Mathematics Instructor Mr. Mr. Breckenfelder joined Marmion’s faculty in 2017. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Iowa State University, a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin, and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Aurora University. He worked in the telecom industry for over 20 years in the areas of research, network operations, strategic planning and mergers and acquisitions, in the U.S. as well as in Europe and the Middle East. He has over 15 years of experience teaching mathematics and statistics at the high school, undergraduate and graduate level. He and his wife, Sherri, have two daughters.
Katherine Brennan Health Officer, Genetics & Forensic Science, Biology, Chess Club Moderator Education: BA in Secondary Education Social Sciences (NIU); BA in Anthropology, with a minor in History (NIU); MS in Molecular Biology (NIU) Certifications: Secondary Education Social Sciences; Illinois Homicide Investigator; BLS for Healthcare Providers; Heartsaver CPR Instructor. Biography: Mrs. Brennan began teaching Biology in 2001. She currently teaches Biology and Genetic & Forensic Science. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Brennan is also Marmion's Health Officer and moderator of the Chess Club. While earning her Master's degree, she taught several labs at NIU: Organismal Diversity, Genetics, and Pathogenic Microbiology. Prior to coming to Marmion, Mrs. Brennan taught Biology and Chemistry at Kishwaukee Community College. She and her husband Pat have been married since 1988 and they have 3 children (Madeline - RHS '08, Nicholas '10 and Joseph '12).
Charles Brown Social Science Instructor Mr. Brown is a true renaissance man. He is an accomplished musician, successful businessman (IBM, AT&T and Verizon Wireless) and a member of the Lehigh University Athletic Hall of Fame. He earned a B.S. from Lehigh and an M.A. from the University of Phoenix. Mr. Brown did his student teaching at Neuqua Valley High School and has coached basketball, soccer and track & field on the high school level.
Sherry Brown Registrar Mrs. Brown joined the Marmion staff in August of 2005 as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Student Academic Services and to the Director of College Guidance. Her other duties include being the Health Records Coordinator and the Working for Your Education Coordinator. She attended the Control Data Institute of Technology and has a certificate in Computer Technology. Mrs. Brown has three children: Jynette, Meghan, and Michael ’08.
Fr. Michael Burrows, OSB '70 Theology II (H), Student Chaplain, Abbey Liaison Fr. Michael, a ’70 graduate of Marmion, has been teaching at the Academy since 1980. He received his BA in History and Secondary Education for Kansas Newman College in Wichita and his Masters of Divinity from St. Meinrad School of Theology. He completed a Masters in Library science at Rosary College. Fr. Michael completed a six months sabbatical in 2004-05, studying Theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois. Teaching Philosophy: My primary goal is that the students at some point in the year encounter the presence of God in the classroom material and experiences. I feel very fortunate to be able to teach sophomore theology as I thoroughly enjoy the age group and the material that we cover.
Rebecca Cann Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, Writing Lab Coordinator, English Teacher Mrs. Cann joined Marmion’s faculty during the second semester of 2015 while filling in for a early retirement in the English Department. It was during her first year as part of the faculty that Mrs. Cann facilitated the creation of a Writing Lab to not only help students become more successful writers, but also to support the faculty in the development of their subject specific writing assignments. Currently, when not teaching in the English Department, Mrs. Cann can be found assisting Marmion’s teaching faculty with the development, implementation and evaluation of current instructional best practices through a variety of professional development opportunities. Prior to coming to Marmion, she has 17 years experience in the field of education. She spent 11 years teaching English at the high school level and 6 years teaching part time at the collegiate level in the School of Education at Loyola University. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Eastern Illinois University, a Secondary Teaching degree from Elmhurst College, and a Master’s in Teaching from Rockford College.
Frank Chapman Jr. Head Baseball Coach, AP World History, World History Mr. Chapman joined the Marmion faculty in 2015. He graduated in 2005 from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a B.S. in history education. Mr. Chapman began his teaching career as a social studies teacher in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada and has taught various history courses and psychology at Burlington Central High School and Freeport High School. In 2013 he graduated from Aurora University with a M.A. in Educational Leadership. Mr. Chapman teaches AP World History and World History courses and serves as head baseball coach.
Jerry Chenski Theology I, Theology I Honors, Theology II Mr. Chenski was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. He is seminary trained and educated. He attended Quigley Seminary South high school, Niles College seminary of Loyola University, and also studied graduate school theology at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. Mr. Chenski spent 18 years in the social service field leading and directing agencies across the Western suburbs that serve individuals with physical as well as intellectual disabilities. He began serving the church as a Youth Minister in his home parish, directing retreats, service projects, as well as social outings. Mr. Chenski was the director of Campus Ministry and theology instructor at Resurrection high school located on the Northwest side of Chicago for 9 years. In addition he directed all student (including Kairos) retreats, Masses, prayer services, as well as the service learning program. He was also the moderator of the student council, and drama club, and served on the Administrative Team. Mr. Chenski served as a retreat Director/Developer for Resurrection Retreats, which provided religious and non religious retreats throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. When he is free he still likes to serves as retreat director and mission speaker for various churches and religious groups. Mr. Chenski has worked as a Director of Religious Education for St. Damian parish in Oak Forest, and St. Mary of Gostyn parish in Downers Grove, both parishes serve over 550 students, and have over 50 volunteers. He is the former president of the East deanery of Dupage county, for RE Directors. At Marmion Mr. Chenski has taught Theology I, Honors Theology I, Theology II, and Theology IV. This year he is teaching Theology 1, Honors Theology I, and Theology IV. He also coaches baseball, and is a JR. class retreat team member. Mr. Chenski is an elected library official in his town, he is the President of his parish council, former president of the school parents association and is a volunteer in the Cook County Forest preserve district.
Danila Colosi-Carrano AP Chemistry, AP Physics, Physics and Honors Physics Mrs. Colosi-Carrano joined the Marmion faculty in 2012 as a chemistry instructor. She holds a degree in Electronic Physics from Italy, a degree in Astrophysics from the UK, and a degree in Applied Physics from Northern Illinois University. She earned her teaching certificate for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from Northern Illinois University. Mrs. Colosi-Carrano has been involved in the design and realization of a “Transistor Edge Superconductor Sensor” for detection of cosmic microwave background radiation at Argonne National Laboratory and has been involved in the research for the cause of Presbyopia as the human eye ages, conducted at Northern Illinois University and Argonne National Laboratory. In 2015 she became a member of QuarkNet, a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, collaborating with Fermi Lab on a research of Hydrogen 1 detection. Mrs. Colosi-Carrano is the moderator of chemistry club and Quarknet team and loves to help the WYSE team. She and her husband have two children, the youngest of which is a Marmion graduate ( '16).
Ronda Cousins Advancement Assistant Ronda joined the Marmion Advancement Office in October 2016 after serving in Catholic publishing. She graduated summa cum laude from Northern Illinois University with a B.S. in Accounting. She began her career in public accounting and served in financial roles for a Fortune 500 company prior to starting her own business in 2000. Ronda and her husband, Matt have three children – Jacob, a real estate attorney and JAG Officer in the Army National Guard, Sophia, a student at Rosary High School and Owen, a student at Holy Cross. They are parishioners at St. Katharine Drexel in Sugar Grove.
Joe Currie '82 Associate Athletic Director, Director of Facilities Rental and Usage and Campus Store Manager Mr. Currie joined Marmion in 1993 and has a Bachelor Degree in Business from Aurora University. He has been the Varsity Football Assistant Coach, Sophomore Football Assistant Coach, Freshman Football Head Coach, Sophomore Basketball Head Coach, Freshman Basketball Head Coach, Varsity Basketball Head Coach and Sophomore Football Head Coach. Joe is married to wife Lisa with two sons, Ben '04 and Brandon '17. Prior to his employment at Marmion he was in the Insurance Industry for 25 years.
Lisa Currie Substitute Teacher, Support Staff Member Mrs. Currie joined Marmion in February 2014 as a Substitute Teacher. She is happy to be starting her fifth year subbing and this year will be working in the Library and filling in at the receptionist desk. You will also find her at home football games selling spirit wear for the Hammes Campus Store.
Mrs. Currie earned her Bachelors Degree in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Business from Olivet Nazarene University. Mrs. Currie has been a coaches wife for the last 23 years and her husband Joe Currie '82 and their two son's Ben '04 and Brandon '17 are proud Marmion graduates! While her son's attended Marmion Mrs. Currie was involved in the Mothers' Club.
Past professional experiences include Insurance Agent, Sales Trainer and working for Waubonsee Community College in their high school summer credit program. Lisa and Joe are parishioners at Annunciation Catholic Church.
Andrew Damato '01 Assistant Principal of Operations and Technology Mr. Damato joined the Marmion staff in 2012. He attended Aurora University where he earned his Bachelors of Science in 2006. He earned his Masters in Computer Information Science from Elmhurst College in 2015 and MBA from Elmhurst in 2017. He coached Marmion football from 2001 until 2007. He began his teaching career in 2009 at Guerin Preparatory High School in River Grove where he served in many capacities including Assistant Dean of Students as well as the boys Athletic Director. Mr. Damato has had many family members that have attended both Marmion and Rosary and he is happy to be able to continue to serve the Marmion Community!
Kelsey Damato Assistant Director of the Academic Center, Yearbook Moderator Mrs. Damato joined Marmion in 2014. She attended Northern Illinois University where she earned her degree in Special Education as a Learning Behavior Specialist in 2014. An Aurora native, she is a 2009 graduate of Aurora Central Catholic High School, and a lifelong member and graduate of Annunciation BVM. She is excited to be piloting the Freshman Skills course, and is looking forward to being a part of Marmion's proactive approach for meeting the needs of and supporting all students.
Bill Dickson '81 Director of Admissions Mr. Dickson is a proud Marmion graduate of the Class of '81. In 1985, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communications from Western Illinois University. His father was a long-time employee of the Marmion Family for 40 years, serving the school's community and caring for the campus. His two brothers are also alumni, George '83 and Joe '93, along with his nephew, Joseph Fremgen '16. Over his tenure in the Admissions Office, Marmion’s enrollment has increased by more than 70%. Bill also serves as the Student Ambassador Moderator and is a member of the Principal’s Advisory Committee and the Financial Aid Committee.
Justin Dimitri Director of Student Affairs, Athletic Website and Athletic Social Media Coordinator Mr. Dimitri has been part of the Marmion staff since 2009. Mr. Dimitri is a graduate of Aurora University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Secondary Education, and a Masters Degree in Educational Administration. He was also a member of the Aurora University football program as a player and a coach. In addition to his administrative role and teaching duties, Mr. Dimitri also serves as a varsity coach with the football program. Mr. Dimitri is an Apple Certified Teacher and a Certified Google Educator.
SFC Wayne Dotson Military LET III Instructor SFC Dotson is a native of The Bayou State was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and graduated from Linear High School in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1971. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 1974. Upon completion of Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he attended Advance Individual Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
His assignments include: Headquarter Garrison at Fort Sheridan, Illinois as a Supply Specialist, 2nd Infantry Division 3rd Brigade Headquarter Troop 4/7 Cavalry Korea, Supply Sergeant at the Battalion S-4, 50th Signal Group 326th Signal Battalion, 514 Signal Company Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as Company Supply Sergeant, 177th Personnel Service Company, Ansbach Germany, Military Enlisted Processing Command, Fresno, California, Army Material Command, Camp Zama, Japan, United States Army Combine Arms Support Command, Fort Lee, Virginia, as a Base of Issue Plan Developer, while serving at Ft. Lisa Dzuricsko Art Appreciation, Art Explorations, Digital Design, Web Design, Art History, Painting and Drawing, Dr. Scholl’s Gallery Director, Art Club, Guitar Club Mrs. Dzuricsko joined the Marmion faculty in 2000. She teaches Art Appreciation, Art Explorations, Digital Design, Web Design, Art History, Painting and Drawing. She curates Dr. Scholl's Art Gallery, hosting four yearly shows featuring local artists. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, she received the Notre Dame Alumni Award in 2000 from the ND Naperville/Lisle Club. In 2011, she received the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education Visual Art Educator Award. She is a practicing artist who exhibits her work locally. In 2018 she completed an MFA degree at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Barb Ebert Algebra 1 and Algebra 1 Honors, Algebra Foundations, Head Volleyball Coach Ms. Ebert graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and from Northern Illinois University with a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Prior to joining Marmion, she worked as a Market Analyst for OTR Global and a Regional Marketing Manager for Dun & Bradstreet. She also taught Algebra for several years at St. Mary’s in Sycamore, various business courses at NIU, and has served as a private tutor for Algebra and ACT preparation.
MAJ Mark Emerson Military IV Major Mark Emerson grew up on the south side of Chicago graduating from St. Rita High School in 1973. He attended the University of Illinois-Chicago graduating with bachelor degrees in Political Science and History in 1979 and through ROTC was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry. Maj Emerson is a graduate of the Infantry Officers Basic Course, the Special Forces Qualification Course, the Armored Officers Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College, Airborne and Ranger school. Maj Emerson has served in numerous command and staff positions throughout his career. His first unit of assignment was with the 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley where he served as a Mech Infantry Platoon Leader, Mortar Platoon Leader, Company XO and Battalion Logistics Officer. He was an A-Team leader in the 5th Special Forces Group followed by an assignment with the 6th Infantry Division in Alaska where he commanded two Infantry Companies. He was next sent to Selfridge Air National Guard Base outside of Detroit where he served as the executive Officer of an Army Readiness Group followed by his last assignment as the Executive Officer of the Chicago Recruiting Battalion. After his retirement from the Army in 1999 he worked as a JROTC instructor in the Chicago Public Schools until June of 2000 when he became the Senior Army Instructor at Marmion Academy. Major Emerson is married to the former Joan Carroll and they have two children: Amanda, and Michael. Amanda Emerson is a Captain in the Illinois Army and has recently returned from Afghanistan where she spent a year as an Engineer Platoon Leader. Mike is an automotive technician working for Nissan Motors.
Bill Fox '74 Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations Bill is a 1974 Marmion graduate and longtime resident of the Fox Valley area. He received his BA in Marketing from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota. Bill enjoyed a 23 year career with Sony Electronics serving in a variety of sales and marketing management roles in Illinois as well as in California and New Jersey. He is the father of four children, Veronica, Tom (’03), Becky and Alyssa. Bill resides in Batavia with his wife Janice and stepchildren Brad and Brooke. Bill’s mother, Toni Fox, is a Lifetime Member of the Abbot Marmion Society and his father, +Bill, was a past President of the Marmion Dad’s Club in the mid-1960’s. Bill has three alumni brothers, Jim (’62), Dan (’65) and Mike (’66) and a sister, Mary. Bill’s nephew Will is a 2001 graduate of the Academy.
Nancy Hansen Associate Director of Advancement Mrs.Hansen joined the Advancement Team in 2018 as a part-time Associate Director of Advancement. Her primary role is to help finalize the current $7 million Campus Renewal Campaign and to set Marmion up for success for future campaigns. Nancy has 32 years of advancement experience, including ten years as Vice President of Advancement at Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin and 17 years as a consultant. Her focus has been on strategic planning, board development, major gifts and planned giving. Nancy, and her husband Jim (St. Eds '81), live in Geneva with their two children, Katie and AJ. They are very active with the youth and mission programs at United Methodist Church of Geneva and with AFS, an international exchange student program. In addition to her work at Marmion, Nancy manages her family farm (corn, soybeans, cattle and conservation filter strips) in Mills County and Fremont County, Iowa as well as several other family business endeavors. Kathleen Hausmann Executive Director of Advancement Kathleen joined the Advancement team in 2018, as the Associate Director of Advancement-Annual Funds & Events. In July of 2019, she moved into the Director of Advancement role where she continued to help manage our annual funds efforts, directing events and had oversight of outreach efforts as it related to enrollment management. In March of 2020 she was named Executive Director of Advancement. In her role as Executive Director of Advancement, she has the responsibility of advancing the mission of Marmion and of raising needed gifts to help fund Marmion Abbey, Marmion Academy, Abbey Farms, and Marmion's Guatemala Mission. Mrs. Hausmann brings with her nearly 20 years of experience as an advancement professional with proven success in building and managing long-term relationships with individual, corporate, foundation and community partners in securing financial and in-kind contributions. Kathleen and her husband Marc live in Aurora and have three daughters, Mariska (14), Macayli (25), and Lyndsi (27). Marc is a Founding Partner of Maclyn, an advertising agency based in Naperville. Both he and Kathleen are active in the community through various non-profit boards and committees. .
Ophelia Hernandez Receptionist Mrs. Hernandez has been subbing in the receptionist position since 2009 and began as full time receptionist in May 2014 and therefore no stranger to Marmion. She and her husband Steve have 3 sons, Steven, Javier '00 and Daniel '06. She started volunteering with the Sports Booster, and Parents Club and held several positions in the Mothers' Club including that of President in 2005-06. Her experience within a school environment began in Miami where she was an Administrative Assistant to the Principal/Owner of a prominent Private Elementary School for 11 years. Her husband Steve is also a Life Trustee Member of Marmion.
Brandon Hillary English Instructor Mr. Hillary graduated from Illinois State University in fall 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Education. He joined the Marmion Academy English Department in fall 2020 and currently teaches freshman and junior English. He also coaches football, basketball, and is involved with the yearbook club.
Bill Johnson '64 Assistant Director of Outreach Ministry, Campus Minister Mr. Johnson is a ’64 Marmion graduate and is married with two adult children and four grandchildren. He has taught Senior Theology since 1998 and is also the Director of Campus Ministry. He has a B.A. in Communications and a M.A. in Youth/Pastoral studies from Loyola University in Chicago. He was ordained a deacon in 1998 in the Rockford Diocese and is assigned to his home parish, St. Patrick in St. Charles.
Mr. Johnson was named Volunteer of the Year by the Northeastern Special Olympics for his outstanding work with Special Olympic athletes. He also received the following awards for his work with teens:Joliet Diocese - Pier Giorgio Frassati Achievement Award for exemplary work in the area of Faith Development with teens; Rockford Diocese -Bishop O’Neil Award in Catechetics for outstanding service in Religious Education, St. Phillip Diaconate Award for dedication in the field of evangelization to teens.
Mr. Johnson has also been a Hospice Chaplain and volunteer with the Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice in Geneva for the past ten years.
Carol Johnson Outreach Administrative Assistant Carol Johnson worked at St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles for 21 years as secretary for the Director of Religious Education for the Middle School and High School Confirmation Program.
MSG William E. Jones JROTC Instructor MSG Jones was born in Birmingham, AL and reared in Carbon Hill, AL, a suburb of Birmingham. He is married to the former Elizabeth Ann Padilla. MSG Jones and Elizabeth have a combined family that includes: Edgwinna Jones (daughter), Carbon Hill, AL; SGT Justin Turner, son (U. S. Army – Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, GA); Specialist Bryce Turner, son (U.S. Army – Fort Carson, Colorado); Hazel F. Jones, daughter (Sophomore) CoLin Community College, Mendenhall, MS; William E. Jones, Jr, son (Freshman) Hinds Community College, Utica, MS; Demi S. Jones, daughter (Junior) Mendenhall High School, Mendenhall, MS. MSG Jones enlisted in the Army in 1982; he attended Basic Training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. Upon completion of Basic Training, he attended Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty, 91E, Dental Specialist. Master Sergeant Jones served many roles in the United States Army including: Army Recruiter, Nurse Recruiter, Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Recruiter, Recruiting Station Commander, AMEDD Recruiter Trainer, Senior Recruiting Operations Noncommissioned Officer (NCO), and Senior Guidance Counselor. Master Sergeant Jones retired from the Army in April 2004. In 1988, Master Sergeant Jones was selected to attend the United States Army Recruiting School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN. His former military education includes Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Army Recruiting Operations Course, Army Administrative Specialist Course, and the Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Course. Master Sergeant Jones graduated with honors (Cum Laude) from Belhaven University, Jackson, MS, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Administration (2011), and a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership in 2013. He joined the Academy in 2019 as an instructor in the JROTC Program.
Siobhan Kates French I and II Siobhan Kates began teaching French I, French II, French III, French IV and AP French at Marmion in 2011 as a maternity leave substitute for Angela Vock. She is now working part time at Marmion teaching French 1, 2, and 3/4 as well as acting as a private French tutor for all levels of the language outside of Marmion Academy. Prior to coming to Marmion, Mrs. Kates taught Kindergarten – AP French for 4 years at Morgan Park Academy and all levels of French for 5 years at Marist High School. Mrs. Kates has also taught at Waubonsee Community College. She served two years on the Executive Council for the American Association of Teachers of French. Mrs. Kates holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Mount Holyoke College and a Master of Arts from Middlebury College/ Université de Paris.
Carol Kinzer Honors Algebra II, Algebra II, Math Team Asst. Coach, Jr. High Math Contest Co-Leader Ms. Kinzer joined the Marmion faculty in 2012 as a member of the mathematics department. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Pomona College in Claremont, CA, and a Master of Science in Information and Computer Science from Georgia Tech. Prior to attending Aurora University to earn her teaching certificate, Ms. Kinzer was a Systems Engineer at IBM Corporation. She also worked at MicroAge as the Director of Special Projects and Training.
Joseph Large '97 Assistant Principal of Academics, AP Computer Science, Math Team Asst. Coach, WYSE Team Asst. Coach, Robotics Team Asst. Coach, Bass Fishing Head Coach Mr. Large, a ’97 graduate of Marmion, joined the faculty in 2004 as member of the Mathematics Department. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and later a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science. Mr. Large then later went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University. From 2004-2013, Mr. Large served as a member of the Marmion Mathematics Department as both a full-time instructor and department chair, also receiving the Rising Star Award from the Chicago Mathematics Teachers Association in 2008. Beginning in 2013, Mr. Large joined the administrative team as the Director of Curriculum, Data Analysis, and Scheduling. In 2014, Mr. Large took on his current position as Director of Student Academic Services. He has been a member of the Illinois and National Councils of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematics Department Heads of the Western Chicago Suburbs, and has served on the Advisory Boards for the Math Teachers Association, the ICTM State Math Contest, and the IHSA Bass Fishing Committee.Mr. Large is the head coach of the Bass Fishing Team, and an assistant coach for the Math Team, WYSE Team, and Robotics Teams. Mr. Large serves on the Principal’s Staff, the Principal’s Advisory Board, the Department Chairperson’s Committee, the Student Support Committee, the Technology Committee, the Student Life Committee, the Facilities Committee, and chairs the Academic Review Board. Mr. Large has also served as a leader on various Marmion retreats including Kairos #1 and Kairos #50. Mr. Large and his family reside in Cortland.
Mark Malkowski '08 Director of Campus Ministry & Student Life, Psychology Instructor, Student Council Moderator Mr. Malkowski, a 2008 graduate of Marmion Academy, returned to Marmion in 2013. Before serving as Director of Campus Ministry & Student Life, he was the Director of the Academic Center and Associate Campus Minister from 2013-2015. In his role, Mr. Malkowski oversees Marmion’s retreat, Christian service, and faith formation programs, along with student activities/events, clubs, and Student Council. Additionally, he teaches a Psychology course and a Freshman Skills course. Mr. Malkowski attended St. Ambrose University, graduating in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology Teacher Education, and in 2019 earned a Master of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from Lewis University. He has also obtained national certification in Youth Ministry Studies from the Center for Ministry Development, is an active participant in the Benedictine Leadership Institute, a national network of leaders from Benedictine high schools throughout the country, and is pursuing Google Educator certification.
Jeanne McLean Engineering Design, Ceramics Mrs. McLean joined the Marmion faculty as a part-time art instructor in 2007. In 2016, she joined the staff full-time to teach Engineering Design 1 & 2 as well as Ceramic Arts. She has earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Industrial Design from the University of Notre Dame. In 2015, she earned a master’s degree from Columbia College to teach the Visual Arts as an Illinois state licensed educator. She is certified as a Professional in the SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling software program and has been awarded accreditation as a SolidWorks Educator. She also obtained a state endorsement as a Learning Behavior Specialist with experience in assisting students on the Autism Spectrum. Since 2006, Mrs. McLean has directed the foreign immersion mission trips to Guatemala.
Patrick Mitchell '04 Director of Transportation/Assistant Athletic Director/P.E. Teacher Mr. Mitchell earned an Associate of Science in Psychology from Waubonsee Community College (’06), Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Northern Illinois University (’08) and a Masters of Science in Athletic Coaching from West Virginia University (’11). While at West Virginia University he obtained a graduate assistantship teaching Physical Education classes. He has coached men’s soccer at the community college (WCC), Boys varsity (IMSA) and Girls JV (RHS). Mr. Mitchell enjoys working with students and athletes and is proud to be back at Marmion.
Karri Novack Staff Accountant Karri joined Marmion’s Finance Department in January 2015 as the Staff Accountant. She graduated from Northern Illinois University and worked in both public accounting and private industry over the years. Her husband and two sons are graduates of Marmion.
Robyn O'Brien Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Coordinator Mrs. O’Brien joined the Marmion’s Finance Department in September 2016 as the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Coordinator.
Jennifer Patel Advancement Administrative Assistant Jennifer joined the Marmion Advancement Office in January 2021 after working as a Project Manager in a software company. She graduated from Hope College with a B.S. in Accounting. Jennifer and her husband, Mukesh have two children – Sidda and Deven ’24.
Stephanie Patricoski Admissions Administrative Assistant Mrs. Patricoski joined the Marmion staff in June of 1999. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Seton Hill University. She and her husband Paul have three children Adam ’99, Matt ’01 and Amanda (Rosary ’05).
Dr. Victor Pinks II ’72 Director of CPARC Engineering Center, Technology Director, Science Department Chairman, Physics, Engineering Dr. Pinks, a ’72 Marmion graduate, joined the Academy faculty in 2000. Dr. Pinks instructs Applied Engineering Design engineering internships and senior honors research. In addition to his teaching duties he is the Director of the CPARC Engineering Center and moderates the Engineering Club. Dr. Pinks works with students and CPARC businesses on various science projects including high performance computing (HPC) for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) flow, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI), molecular engineering dynamics and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) simulation projects. He continues his own research for optimizing the realism of n-body computer models and simulations using an ‘evolving referent’ – a software technology that he pioneered before coming to Marmion. As Technology Director he is responsible for IT including advisement on technology growth and education at the Academy. Dr. Pinks received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Aurora University and his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Northern Illinois University.
Benita Pinks Administrative Assistant to the IT Department/Print Manager Mrs. Pinks began working in the IT Department in the fall of 2012. She coordinates IT/Science budgetary activities and provides user support for print management services.
Maura Purse English Instructor, NHS Moderator Mrs. Purse joined Marmion's faculty in 2012. Prior to that she taught for five years at Seton Academy, a co-ed Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Chicago. She has a Bachelor's Degree in English/Literature and a Master's degree in Administration and Leadership, both from Benedictine University. She is a member of both NCTE and ASCD. Mrs. Purse is also the moderator of the National Honor Society.
David Rakow Director of Student Academic Services, Director of the Academic Center, World History, Football Coach Mr. Rakow is a 2005 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences - History, minored in Special Education, and was a member of the football team. In 2013 he received his Learning Behavior Specialist 1 endorsement from Aurora University. He joined Marmion in 2006 as an instructor in the Social Sciences department. From 2013-2017, he served as an Academic Counselor and as Director of the Academic Center. From 2017 through the present, he has been Marmion’s Director of Student Academic Services. Mr. Rakow has also been an assistant football coach since 2006, was an assistant basketball during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, and was the head varsity baseball coach from 2007–2015, winning five conference championships, four regional championships, and was named Baseball Coach of the Year by both the Daily Herald and the Kane County Chronicle.
Bob Rebenstorf English Department Chairman,Editor of Student Literary Magazine, English Instructor Mr. Rebenstorf started teaching at Marmion in 1985. He received his B.A. in English Literature from Knox College, Galesburg,IL and his M.A. in English Linguistics from Northern Illinois University. He co-founded the High School Summer Program at Waubonsee College and teaches English Composition there. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Metro Chicago English Leaders, and the International Arthurian Society. He served as Head Cross Country Coach from 1985-2009. His teams garnered nine Conference Championships and made several State Meet appearances. In addition he coached track at Marmion and basketball at both Marmion and Rosary H.S. Mr. Rebenstorf’s teaching philosophy: Challenge students and then support their efforts to achieve.
Fr. Charles Reichenbacher, OSB ’59 Director of Planned Giving Fr. Charles has been in teaching/administering at the Academy since 1968. Duties have included Theology and Sociology teacher (11 years); teacher and Associate Director of Development and Alumni Director (14 years). He served as the Director of Development (30+ years) for Marmion Abbey, Marmion Academy and Priory of San Jose, Guatemala.
Terri Rios Creative Director Mrs. Rios joined Marmion Academy in 2012 as the Director of Communications. Prior to coming to Marmion she was the Director of Communications at Rosary High School for 8 years. She graduated summa cum laude in 2004 with a B.S. in Graphic Arts. She and her husband Juan live in North Aurora and have four wonderful children: Katie (RHS '07), Mike ('08), Jon ('12) and Kristin.
Fr. Joel Rippinger OSB Theology IV Honors, AP U.S. History, Faculty-Staff Chaplain Fr. Joel has been a teacher at the Academy since 1976, which makes him the senior member of the faculty by years taught and by age. He received his B.A. Degree from Saint Procopius College, M.A. Degree from the University of Notre Dame, and S.T.B. And S.T.L. Degrees from the Pontifical University of Saint Anselm in Rome, Italy. He has written numerous articles on monastic history and spirituality and is the author of The Benedictine Order in the United States and Struggle and Ascent: The History of Mount Angel Abbey. I have a love for both theology and history. I have always used the Socratic method of teaching and feel that I am called to challenge my AP and Honor students to bring out the full potential of their intellectual gifts. I hope to transmit to my theology students a model of Christian and monastic life that will be of service to them for many years to come, and to my APUSH students a set of critical skills, a love for their country and a sense of civic responsibility and virtue. One of the great satisfactions I have found in my decades of teaching at Marmion has been encountering former students who have told me how valuable and formative they found my classes as they went through college and graduate school.
Fr. Nathanael Roberts Permanent Substitute Fr. Nathanael is officially Marmion's "full-time substitute teacher." With a BA from Fordham University and an MA from the University of Chicago, Fr. Nathanael taught Freshman Honors English at Marmion for many years. With his MDiv in Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, Father also taught Freshman Theology for several years, as well as Latin I and II. His last full-time teaching position was his first love, teaching the History of the Catholic Church to juniors for several years.
René Rosas Director of Bands, Music Instructor, Private Lesson Program Mr. René Rosas is responsible for the administration and teaching of the Marmion Rosary Marching, Concert and Jazz Bands. Additionally, he teaches a course in Advanced Musicianship in the Fine Arts Department along with private music lessons for Marmion Rosary Band students. A native of Texas Mr. Rosas earned his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and began his teaching career at Andress High School.His marching band was a four year consecutive Grand Champion at the New Mexico State University Tournament of Bands and the band program received six consecutive Texas Sweepstakes Awards. He then earned the Master of Science in Music Education degree from the University of Illinois where he served as a teaching assistant for the University Bands. Mr. Rosas also served as the Assistant Director of Bands/Marching Band Director at the University of Florida and Illinois State University and most recently as an Assistant Band Director at the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Rosas is also the Assistant Conductor of the Naperville Municipal Band, a position he has held since 2005. He comes to Marmion Academy after nine years of teaching band and general music at St. Raphael Catholic School and Ss Peter and Paul School in Naperville.
John Salomone Mathematics Department Chairperson Mr. Salomone joined the faculty in 2011 as an instructor in Mathematics. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and a Minor in Secondary Education. Mr. Salomone earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Francis in 2014. Mr. Salomone has served as the Mathematics Chairperson since 2014. Mr. Salomone is also the Head Coach of the Marmion Math Team. Mr. Salomone had previous acted as the Junior Varsity Volleyball coach from 2016 – 2018, assisted with the Marmion Musicals from 2011 – 2016, and assisted with the Marmion’s Men Choir from 2011 – 2018.
James Sanders Theology II and Theology IV Mr. Sanders joined Marmion Academy’s theology department in 2017, after having spent close to two decades teaching theology at our sister school, Rosary High School. He earned a BA in theological studies from Hanover College and received his Master of Theological Studies from Harvard University. He did additional work in philosophical theology at the University of Virginia and the University of Iowa. Mr. Sanders enjoys seeing students grow as human beings and as thinkers, and especially aims to help them understand and respond to Truth. Mr. Sanders teaches Theology II and IV—including the elective, “Classical Theological Problems”—LEAD II, and the college-credit Introduction to Philosophy course.
Jennifer Schmidt Executive Director of Finance Mrs. Schmidt joined the Treasurer’s Office as the Academy’s Assistant Treasurer in 2008 and was promoted to the position of Treasurer in 2010. Prior to joining Marmion, Mrs. Schmidt was employed for 11 years by the public accounting firm of Selden Fox, Ltd. in Oak Brook as an Accounting Services Manager and Audit Manager. She is a Certified Public Accountant and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Millikin University in Decatur, IL.

Michael Stroup Garage Mechanic Mr. Stroup joined the community in 2008 as the Academy’s and Abbey’s Mechanic and Garage Manager. He is a master mechanic and most recently was employed by Gjovik Auto Dealership in Sandwich, IL.
Anthony Tinerella '84 Head of School and Principal Mr. Tinerella is a 1984 graduate of the Academy and received his B.S. Science from Illinois State University. In 1990, he returned to the Marmion Community as an instructor in the Science Department were he taught Physics (two years) and Biology, AP Biology, and Honors Biology in the years that followed - through 2009.
Dan Thorpe Director of College Guidance, Head Football Coach, Head Track Coach Mr. Thorpe joined Marmion in 2005. Prior to joining the Marmion staff, Mr. Thorpe was a college guidance counselor and the Head Football Coach at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School (Chardon, OH). He has 37 years of coaching and teaching experience, 16 years in the classroom, and 21 years as a Guidance Counselor. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education/Social Sciences from the University of Wisconsin at Steven’s Point and a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. In addition to his teaching and coaching responsibilities, Mr. Thorpe serves as the manager/moderator of the weight room and weightlifting club.
In 2010 the Marmion football team was the State Runner-up in Class 6A and they have made the IHSA State Playoffs 9 out of the past 14 years. In 2018 the Track Team was the IHSA State Champions in Class 2A and Coach Thorpe was selected the State Coach of the Year in Class 2A.
Dr. Michael Vahl AP Biology, Biology-Honors, Chemistry-Honors, and Chemistry Dr. Vahl earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2000. He continued his education at the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard where he earned his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2003. After serving as a practicing physician for several years, he returned to school at Benedictine University in Lisle to earn his Teaching Certification in 2009. In addition to teaching Science at Marmion since 2011, Dr. Vahl has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Moraine Valley Community College since 2011. In his free time, he enjoys running, basketball, travel, and spending time with his wife, three daughters, and one son.
Judy Valenti Spanish 1 and Spanish 3 Mrs. Valenti is a graduate of Purdue University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and her Master of Arts degree in Spanish literature. She has previously taught at Purdue University and Marmion Academy from 1992 to 2000. She returned to Marmion in 2016 to teach Spanish and to assist in the Academic Center. As of 2017, she again joined the faculty as a full time Spanish instructor.
Kristin Voris English I, IV, English IV AP Ms. Voris joined the English Department as an instructor of English IV in 2008. Kristin earned a Master’s Degree in Film and Literature from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Illinois. She has six years of teaching experience at West Aurora High School and St. Edward High School. Ms. Voris is also head of the Academy’s Drama Club, director of the annual spring musical, as well as coach of Rosary High School’s Dance Team.
Mark Waitkus '08 Theology Department Chair, Theology III, Theology III Honors Mr. Waitkus, a 2008 graduate of Marmion Academy, joined the staff in 2013 as a member of the Theology Department and currently serves as the department chairperson. He graduated from St. Ambrose University in 2012 with Bachelor's Degrees in Secondary English Education and Theology. Mr. Waitkus has instructed classes across all levels at Marmion, and currently teaches the Theology III courses. In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Waitkus also serves as the co-director of the Kairos retreat program, co-directs the junior retreat, and is the head freshmen baseball coach. .
Fr. Paul Weberg OSB Theology IV and Assistant Cross Country Coach Fr. Paul Weberg, OSB, the Prior of Marmion Abbey, teaches senior theology. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Saint Meinrad College in Indiana, a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake – Mundelein Seminary in Illinois, and a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree with a concentration in military chaplaincy from Trinity International University in Illinois. Fr. Paul has been a Benedictine Monk of Marmion Abbey since 1998 and a Priest since 2003. He is also a Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) in the Army Reserve and is currently assigned to the Army Chief of Chaplains Office at the Pentagon to assist in chaplain force management.
Jeanine Williams Social/Emotional Counselor Mrs. Williams joined Marmion Academy in 2017 as the Social/Emotional Counselor. She received her BA from Illinois Benedictine College and MA in School Counseling from Concordia University. Jeanine was most recently Assistant Principal and Counselor at Holy Angels School, Aurora. Jeanine and her husband, Patrick, have three children Nick ’00, Maggie and Frank ’06. In addition, Jeanine and Patrick are Oblates of Marmion Abbey.
Emily Yorke Spanish Instructor (Spanish 2H, 3H & 4) Miss Yorke is a 2012 graduate of Batavia High School and a 2016 graduate of Indiana University - Bloomington where she obtained a Bachelor's degree in Spanish Education. While at IU, Miss Yorke took a semester abroad in Spain where she studied under professors from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and traveled around Europe. She previously taught Spanish at John Young Middle School in Mishawaka, Indiana. She is very happy to be teaching at Marmion Academy, as she is sister to Kyle ('16) and great niece to John Alf ('54).
Antonio Young Dean of Students, Associate Athletic Director, PE Department Chair, Head Basketball Coach Mr. Young comes to Marmion with a great background in education. A native of Schaumburg, Il, Mr. Young graduated from Schaumburg high school in 2002. While at Schaumburg he was as 3 time Varsity letter earner for the basketball program. His high school career was highlighted with a 2001 Class AA State Championship over #1 Nationally ranked Thornwood High School and NBA Lottery Pick Eddie Curry. He also earn other accolades such as 1st Team All-State, All-Area, All-Conference and Daily Herald Player of the Year. Mr. Young was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. As SIU-C he was able to have a special career that was highlighted by a NCAA Sweet 16 Tournament run and his team ended the season Ranked #11 Nationally. Young earned All-Conference, All-Defense, and Defensive All-American honors during his career at Southern Illinois University. He graduated from SIU-C in 2007 with a Degree in Business Management. His playing career was cut short due to injuries; which lead him to find a passion in coaching. Young started as a Graduate Assistant his alma mater SIU-C and was later hired to the staff of Hall of Fame Coach Rick Majerus at Saint Louis University. During his time at SLU he was able to earn his master’s degree Educational Leadership. Although Mr. Young loved coaching college basketball his passion was helping kids at the grassroots level. That led him to take a position at East St Louis Sr. High School as the Head Basketball Coach, District Athletic Director, and Academic Intervention Specialist. While in East St Louis he was able to help the graduation rate almost double and he led his team to an UNDEFEATED Southwestern Conference Championship and Two Regional Championships. Young comes to Marmion from DRW College Prep where he was a Teacher and Head Basketball Coach.
